Insurance for tenants
Good insurance protects you against unexpected costs. As a tenant, there are a few insurances you really should have.
Liability insurance (AVP)
This is the most important insurance for tenants. Liability insurance (also called WA-verzekering voor particulieren in Dutch) covers damage you accidentally cause to others or their property.
- What does it cover? For example, if you accidentally damage your host's floor, break a door, or cause water damage
- Cost: From around €3-5 per month
- Tip: This is possibly the cheapest and most important insurance you can have
Contents insurance
This insurance covers damage to or theft of your own belongings.
- What does it cover? Your laptop, phone, clothing, bicycle: everything that's yours
- When? In case of fire, burglary, water damage, or storm
- Cost: From around €5-10 per month, depending on the value of your belongings
Travel insurance
Are you an international student or expat? Travel insurance or international health insurance is essential. Check whether your Dutch health insurance also applies, or whether you need additional coverage.
Health insurance
Everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands is required to have basic health insurance (basiszorgverzekering). This is separate from your living situation, but good to know if you've just arrived in the Netherlands.
Tips
- Arrange your insurances before you move in
- Compare providers via comparison websites
- Keep your policy details somewhere safe
- Always report damage immediately to both your insurer and your host
