Paying rent
Paying rent is one of your most important obligations as a tenant. Here's how to handle it and what to do if something goes wrong.
How do you pay rent?
Rent is paid directly to your host, usually by a monthly bank transfer. The exact arrangements are in your rental contract:
- Amount: The agreed monthly rent (inclusive or exclusive of additional costs)
- Payment date: Usually the 1st of the month, unless agreed otherwise
- Payment method: Bank transfer is most common. Setting up an automatic transfer is recommended
What's included?
Check your contract for what's covered in the rent:
- Bare rent: Only the use of the room
- Inclusive: Gas, water, electricity, and internet included
- Service costs: Cleaning or maintenance costs may be charged separately
Not sure what's in your rent? Check your contract or ask your host.
First month's rent
Your first month's rent is usually paid at or before the key handover, together with the deposit. Read more in our article on first month payment.
Payment problems?
Can't pay rent on time? It can happen to anyone. The most important thing: communicate early.
- Let your host know as soon as possible
- Tell them when you can pay
- Make an agreement and stick to it

Keep your payment records
Always save your bank statements or payment confirmations. They matter in case of any disputes about rent. An automatic transfer makes this extra easy, and you always have proof.
