First month payment
Moving into your new room is exciting! But before you get the keys, there are a few financial things to sort out. Here's what to expect.
What do you pay at the start?
When moving in, you typically pay two things upfront:
- First month's rent: The full monthly rent for your first month
- Deposit: Usually one month's rent, by law a maximum of 2 months' bare rent
For example: if your monthly rent is €450 and the deposit is 1 month's rent, you'll pay €900 at the start.
When do you pay?
The first payment is usually due before or at the key handover. Your host or Hospi Housing will let you know the exact timing and payment details.
How do you pay?
Always pay by bank transfer, which gives you automatic proof of payment. Avoid cash payments, or if you must, always get a signed receipt.
Your first month's rent is usually paid directly to your host or landlord. The deposit, however, is paid via Hospi Housing. That keeps it safe and means we handle the return at the end of the rental.
Partial month?
Moving in mid-month? In most cases you'll pay a prorated amount for the remaining days of that month, plus the full next month's rent. Check your contract for the exact arrangement.
What's included in the rent?
Make sure you know what your monthly rent covers:
- Inclusive: Gas, water, electricity, and internet included, which is common in hospitaverhuur
- Exclusive: Utilities are billed separately
- Service costs: Some hosts charge extra service costs for things like cleaning
All of this should be clearly stated in your contract.
