Issues & conflicts
Sometimes things don't go as smoothly as you'd hoped. That's normal. You're sharing a home with someone, and that takes adjustment from both sides. Here's how to handle problems and conflicts.
Common issues
- Noise and quiet hours: Different rhythms can clash. Talk through your expectations about quiet times
- Cleaning: Different standards of tidiness. Make concrete agreements about who does what
- Visitors: Disagreements about how often or how long guests can come. Check the house rules
- Shared spaces: Kitchen, bathroom: sharing can be tricky. Set up a schedule if needed
- Personal boundaries: Sometimes you just don't feel comfortable. That's okay, and it's important to talk about it
Steps when there's a conflict
- Talk about it: It sounds simple, but it always starts with a conversation. Pick a calm moment and explain what's bothering you. Avoid accusations and focus on how something makes you feel
- Find a solution together: Listen to your host's perspective and try to reach a compromise
- Put agreements in writing: Agreed on something? Write it down (in the chat or via email) so it's clear for both of you
- Involve Hospi Housing: Can't work it out? Contact us. We can help mediate and think through solutions
When is it serious?
Some situations call for immediate action:
- You feel unsafe: Contact Hospi Housing immediately, and the police if necessary
- Discrimination or intimidation: We don't tolerate this. Read more about reporting discrimination
- The room is uninhabitable: Serious defects (leaks, no heating, pest infestations), which your host is obligated to fix
You're not alone
The Hospi Housing team is here to help. We take complaints seriously and always look for a solution that works for both parties. Don't hesitate to reach out, even if you're not sure whether something is 'serious enough'.
