Municipality of Rotterdam starts campaign to promote Homestay for Students

Due to the high demand for student rooms, the municipality of Rotterdam and Hospi Housing are encouraging homestay rentals. Both parties are launching a mutual campaign, starting this month. They aim to inform Rotterdam residents about the opportunities and benefits of temporarily renting out a room to a student.

Homestay rental means the tenant lives in the host's home. This could be with a single person, a couple, or a family. The municipality actively promotes Homestay rental because they have signed the National Action Plan for Student Housing. The goal is to create more rooms for students. There are still ample opportunities to realize more spaces within existing homes.

Benefits for Tenant, Landlord, and City

Many people have spare rooms, for example because their children have moved out. By temporarily renting out a room, you can help out a student. It offers benefits for both student and host. For the host Homestay rental offers additional income; a welcome advantage in these times of ever-rising costs. In 2023, hosts can earn up to €5998 tax-free.

Hospi Housing started as a student initiative and has now grown into the largest homestay rental platform in the Netherlands. Hospi Housing assists Rotterdam residents interested in temporarily renting out a room in their home. Through personal introductions and a free online platform, they match homeowners with suitable tenants. At the same time, Hospi Housing ensures that room seekers pay a fair rent and find a safe place. This aligns with the municipality's policy and the Dutch law for 'Goed Verhuurderschap'.
