Tilburg launches campaign to promote homestay in the fight against the housing crisis

Due to the severe housing shortage in Tilburg, Hospi Housing, in collaboration with the municipality of Tilburg, Fontys, and Tilburg University, is launching a campaign to promote landlady/landlord rental. The partnership with Hospi Housing started in June 2023 with the aim of finding hosts and host families to rent out a room in their homes.

Because of the housing shortage, the Municipality of Nijmegen, Radboud University and HAN University of Applied Sciences have started a collaboration with Hospi Housing. Per November 2022 they start a two-year collaboration with the aim to find hosts and guest families for students and other room seekers in Nijmegen and surroundings.

Benefits for host, tenant and city

The housing shortage in Tilburg is immense. At the same time, there is a large group of people with spare rooms in their homes. Hospi Housing is the largest Homestay platform in the Netherlands. They provide a solution to the housing shortage by connecting room seekers with local hosts and host families. Hospi Housing personally meets all hosts and host families and assists them in temporarily accommodating a student in their home. At the same time, they represent the student, ensuring they do not overpay and have a safe place to stay.

Homestay can contribute to reducing loneliness and provide hosts with additional financial support. Experience has shown that renting out a room has positive effects on the well-being of both the host and the student. Vice President of the Executive Board, Paulina Snijder, says: 'Tilburg University is very pleased with the collaboration with Hospi Housing. This offers a very welcome addition for our (international) students in the unfortunately still too large housing shortage in Tilburg. I hope that many hosts and host families will sign up and help students find accommodation.'

With a campaign in Tilburg, we are taking the next step together in our mission to provide a solution to the housing shortage through Homestay rental. Joost Bokkers from Hospi Housing says, 'As a former student at Tilburg University, I know how much Tilburg has to offer. It is a fantastic place to live and study. The goal of the collaboration in Tilburg is to match 100 students per year with local host families and hosts within 2 years. This way, Tilburg is building a sustainable and social solution to the housing shortage. Councilor Yusuf Çelik says: 'Landlady/landlord rental contributes to reducing pressure on the housing market for students, providing them with a comfortable home and a good start to their studies. Moreover, we can meet the need of residents for social contact. For us, it's a win-win situation. We are delighted to collaborate with Hospi Housing to revive this housing concept.'
