City of Wageningen and WUR Launch Campaign to Promote Homestay Rental

As many (international) students are heading to Wageningen again this year, the City of Wageningen and WUR are urging residents to temporarily rent out their vacant rooms to students.

Homestay rental is a way of living where the host rents out a part of their home. The host and tenant share common facilities like the kitchen, toilet, and bathroom. As many (international) students are heading to Wageningen again this year, the City of Wageningen and WUR are urging residents to temporarily rent out their vacant rooms to students.

Alderman Eleveld (Housing) of the city of Wageningen: “Many people have extra space in their homes. Temporarily renting out a room provides a solution for students seeking accommodation, as well as other (international) room-seekers. This is why we are launching a campaign to educate residents about homestay rentals. Hospi Housing is assisting us in this initiative. This collaboration eases the burden for hosts and protects those seeking rooms.”

Benefits of Homestay Rental

The campaign aims to inform residents of Wageningen and surrounding municipalities about the opportunities and benefits of temporarily renting out a room. Homestay rentals offer advantages for the tenant, host, and the city. For instance, hosts can earn some extra income. The current housing shortage, increasing loneliness, and rising expenses make the reintroduction of homestay rentals in Wageningen a logical move.

No Permit Required for Homestay Rentals in Wageningen

In the City of Wageningen, you are allowed to rent out up to two rooms (12 m2 each) without a permit, and for max one person per room. It doesn't matter if you own or rent the property. However, if you're a tenant yourself, you need permission from your housing association or landlord. If you reside in a municipality around Wageningen, check with your local government for possibilities and whether a permit is required.
