Your stay with a host: an exciting homestay experience
In this blog, we'll answer all your frequently asked questions and get you optimally prepared to stay with a host.
Welcome to the ultimate guide to a hassle-free homestay experience in the Netherlands. As the largest homestay platform in the country, we at Hospi Housing understand that you may have a few practical questions about how our service works before your move-in date. Especially when it’s your very first time staying with a host or even living in the Netherlands. Don’t worry! In this blog, we'll dive into the most frequently asked questions and get you optimally prepared for your stay.
Can I register with the municipality?
Absolutely! Unless stated otherwise, you can register with the municipality at the address of your host. It's essential to arrange your registration as soon as possible, ideally within five days of your arrival in the Netherlands. You can easily make an appointment online via the website of your municipality. Be sure to read all the information provided carefully to ensure a smooth registration process.
Can I apply for a rent allowance?
You can apply for a rent allowance in some cases, but it depends on your specific situation whether you're eligible. When you rent a room with shared facilities, you may not be eligible for rent allowance in the Netherlands. Check out the website of 'Studentenverzekeringen' for the requirements and apply for rental allowance through the website of the Dutch tax authority.
Is it possible to renew my contract?
The possibility of renewing your contract depends on the type of contract you have and the availability of the host. To explore the option of renewing, first discuss it with your host and ensure that both parties agree on the extended period.
I live with a host, but I don't like it
We're sorry to hear that your experience with your current host is not as expected. While we make every effort to create successful matches, sometimes things don't work out as planned. As a tenant, you have the option to terminate the contract during the entire rental period. Do keep in mind the cancellation period of at least one month. The host can terminate the contract in the first nine months of the rental period, with a three-month notice period.
I found another place to live
If you find another place to live while staying with a host, transparency and good communication are key. Discuss your decision in good consultation with your host and inform them about your plans. Additionally, be mindful of the minimum cancellation period of at least one month, as specified in the contract.
We wish you a pleasant stay! If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to contact us by phone or email. We are always available to assist you in every step of your homestay journey. With love, Hospi Housing team. <3
