Hospi Housing assists Helmond and Geldrop-Mierlo in promoting Homestay Rental
The municipalities of Helmond and Geldrop-Mierlo have joined forces with housing corporation Compaen and Hospi Housing to promote Homestay Rental as a social solution to the housing shortage.

To make better use of existing housing and contribute to solving the housing shortage, housing corporation Compaen and the municipalities of Helmond and Geldrop-Mierlo have joined forces with Hospi Housing to promote Homestay Rental. Homestay Rental allows a resident to rent out a room in their own home. By actively encouraging this form of housing, the collaborating parties aim to increase housing availability for room seekers in the region. Additionally, Homestay Rental provides financial benefits for landlords and can strengthen social connections within neighborhoods.
A Win-Win-Win Situation
Many people have extra space in their homes. By temporarily renting out a room, hosts can help address the housing shortage in Helmond and Geldrop-Mierlo. Additionally, they benefit from tax-free rental income of up to €6,324 per year and - not to forget - the social benefits of sharing a home. Homestay Rental thus creates a win-win-win situation for the municipality, the landlord, and the tenant.
In North Brabant, various municipalities are already actively promoting Homestay Rental. For example, in 2023, Eindhoven launched a campaign in collaboration with TU/e, Fontys, and DAE. Tilburg soon followed, also promoting Homestay Rental as a solution to the housing shortage together with Tilburg University and Fontys.
Benefits for Compaen Tenants
For Compaen tenants, Homestay Rental presents a great opportunity to earn extra income while also benefitting socially. Renting out a room provides additional earnings without affecting benefits such as housing allowance or pension (AOW). Shared housing also optimizes available living space and fosters new social connections. Compaen actively supports its tenants and provides advice and guidance in collaboration with Hospi Housing. Joint Pilot in Helmond and Geldrop-Mierlo
The collaboration focuses on informing and encouraging potential landlords in the region. The Dutch government considers Homestay Rental an important measure to combat the housing crisis. In Geldrop-Mierlo, renting out a room through Homestay Rental is permit-free. In Helmond, a permit is required, but Compaen and Hospi Housing apply for this on behalf of any Compaen tenant who wishes to start Homestay Rental. During the pilot, the municipality will cover the permit costs, meaning landlords will not have to pay for their Homestay Rental permit during this period.
Alderman Van Gestel of Geldrop-Mierlo: “Many people have extra space in their homes. By temporarily renting out a room, we can work together to tackle the housing shortage in Geldrop-Mierlo. Moreover, it also offers benefits for the landlord, such as tax-free rental income and social interaction. Homestay Rental is therefore a win-win situation for all our residents.”
The campaign highlights both the financial and social benefits of Homestay Rental. Landlords can profit financially while also helping to address the housing crisis, rising living costs, and social isolation. The campaign will focus on two aspects: providing accurate information about the possibilities of Homestay Rental and sharing real-life success stories from the region. This way, we demonstrate that Homestay Rental is accessible to almost everyone and can be highly beneficial.

As the largest Homestay Rental platform in the Netherlands, Hospi Housing provides guidance for both hosts and room seekers. Potential hosts can sign up for free and receive step-by-step support, from finding a suitable tenant to drafting a rental agreement.
