Ending your rental contract
Want to end your rental contract? You can always do so, but there are a few rules and steps to keep in mind. Here's exactly how it works.
Notice period
With a hospita contract, tenants usually have a notice period of one month. If you give notice on 15 March, for example, your end date is 15 April. The period starts the moment your host receives your notice. Note: your contract may state a different or longer notice period, so always check.
Does the type of contract matter?
Notice rules can differ per contract. With an open-ended contract the normal notice period applies. With a fixed-term contract there may be agreements about a minimum rental period. In doubt? Check your contract or ask us.
How do you give notice?
You give notice in writing, but it needn't be complicated. A message via WhatsApp or email is fine, as long as you get a confirmation that your host received it. Clearly state your name, the address and your desired end date. A short message is enough:
"Dear [host's name], I hereby end my rental agreement for [address] as of [date]. Could you confirm receipt? Kind regards, [your name]"
On the platform
Also let us know you're leaving via the platform. Under My stay you change the end date of your rental. Your host can then indicate whether the deposit will be fully returned or whether (part of) it will be withheld, and if so for what reason. That way it's clear to both of you what's been agreed.
What happens next?
- Your rent continues until the end date.
- Schedule a final inspection with your host.
- Arrange your deregistration at the municipality.
- Hand in all keys on the end date.
Can your host end the contract?
Yes, but different rules apply to the host. During the nine-month trial period your host can give notice with three months' notice. After that, regular tenant protection applies and the host can only give notice with a legally valid reason. Read more in your rights & obligations and in Tenant protection & rental law.
