Extend or leave early
Plans change. Maybe you want to stay longer because you're enjoying it, or leave earlier for a new job or study programme. Here's what your options are.
Staying longer
Want to extend your stay? In many cases this is possible:
- Discuss it with your host: Start the conversation well in advance. Not every host can or wants to extend
- Contract extension: If you both agree, the contract is extended via a new contract or an addendum
- Note the trial period: After the 9-month trial period of a hospita contract, you get stronger tenant protection. This is important for both parties to understand
Leaving early
Sometimes you need to leave sooner than planned. Here are the steps:
- Inform your host as soon as possible: The earlier you tell them, the better your host can plan
- Check your notice period: With a hospita contract, the notice period is 1 month. So you must give notice at least 1 month before your desired departure date
- Give written notice: Do this via email or the chat so you have proof
- Handle the practicalities: Final inspection, key handover, municipal deregistration: check the checkout checklist
What if your host wants you to leave early?
During the trial period (first 9 months), your host can terminate the contract with 3 months' notice. After the trial period, this is only possible with a legally valid reason.

Temporary absence
Going away for a while (internship, holiday, family visit)? Discuss it with your host. Your rent obligation simply continues, but it's nice to let your host know you'll be away for a bit.
