Professional Mediation: a Solution for Disputes between Neighbours and Roommates

Professional mediation can help for disputes between neighbours, but can also offer solutions for conflicts between hosts and tenants.

Every year, Hospi Housing facilitates hundreds of connections between hosts and tenants across the Netherlands. This consistently results in many beautiful stories of happy hosts and tenants. However, sometimes things do not go well, and either there is no connection, or minor irritations create tension. Occasionally, all avenues have been explored, and even with Hospi Housing’s support, the host and tenant cannot resolve their issues. In such cases, an external, neutral party can provide a solution. One such option is Professional Neighborhood Mediation. In this blog, we will tell you everything about what Neighborhood Mediation entails, where you can access it, and how it can benefit you.

What is Professional Neighborhood Mediation?

You might find yourself in an unpleasant situation in your home: you are annoyed by loud noises from housemates, disturbances from visitors, or scattered trash. When people live close together, the chance of conflicts or disputes increases. If communication is lacking or ineffective, things can escalate quickly.

Neighborhood mediators can help you and your neighbors or housemates resolve issues together. Trained volunteers, known as neighborhood mediators, listen to both parties. They do not take sides and remain neutral. The goal is for the conflicting parties to reach a resolution together, guided by the mediators. In any conflict, it is preferable for the parties involved to resolve the issue themselves rather than having a third party impose a solution. This approach reduces the likelihood of recurring problems. Mediators also adhere to strict confidentiality agreements.

Who Can Use Professional Neighborhood Mediation?

Professional Neighborhood Mediation is available to all residents of the Netherlands who are facing or at risk of encountering a conflict. The service is free, but both parties are expected to consider an acceptable solution and actively participate in reaching it. Neighborhood Mediation is active in over 300 municipalities.

As the name suggests, neighborhood mediation focuses on resolving disputes between neighbors. However, in some municipalities, it also applies to conflicts between hosts and tenants, such as in Utrecht. If you are experiencing a conflict with your host or tenant and are unsure of what steps to take, let us know, and we will help determine the best solution for you.
