Recap of 2024: first 5-year Anniversary year of Hospi Housing

Five years ago, we - Daan, Joost, and Maurits - walked out of the Chamber of Commerce with pride: Hospi Housing was born. Since then, we have dedicated ourselves day in and day out to promoting homestay rentals as a solution to the room shortage. And it's fair to say, we're starting to see our efforts pay off.

Five years ago, we—Daan, Joost, and Maurits—walked out of the Chamber of Commerce beaming with pride: Hospi Housing was born. Since then, we have dedicated ourselves day in and day out to promoting homestay rentals as a solution to the room shortage. And it's fair to say, we're starting to see our efforts pay off.

We are active everywhere

This year, our first lustrum year, was filled with milestones. For the first time, we had over 100 rooms simultaneously listed on our platform; we have room seekers from 185 different countries, aged between 16 and 85 (!) years old; and we made our 1000th successful match. Hospi Housing collaborates with over 50 municipalities and housing corporations and is active throughout the Netherlands.

We continued to make headlines, forged new partnerships, toured with 10 aldermen from the largest cities in the Netherlands visiting hosts and tenants, and worked closely with the ministry to promote campaigns and other ways to encourage homestay rentals.

We are policy

Not literally, of course. But we do exert a significant influence. Together with municipalities, housing corporations, and other organizations, we are constantly working hard to relax regulations and simplify policies. Because if you and your space meet the criteria and you are enthusiastic, then homestay rentals should be possible.

Our efforts are paying off: Amsterdam housing corporations have (finally) started a pilot, the city council in Arnhem has decided to keep homestay rentals permit-free, and Groningen is adjusting its policy. Additionally, broader efforts by Hospi Housing continue. Recent research by Platform31 shows that up to 170,000 additional living spaces can be created just by housing corporations alone by promoting home sharing (including homestay rentals).

We are proud

Sometimes it feels like we have only just begun. But when we pause and look back at what we've achieved—with and thanks to you—we can be incredibly proud. We are moving in the right direction, and 2025 promises to be a great year in every respect. We are excited about it.

On behalf of the entire Hospi Housing team: happy holidays and a promising 2025 to all ✨✨
