Greater Eindhoven Region Expands Partnership with Hospi Housing to Create More Room for House Seekers
The Urban Region Eindhoven is expanding its partnership with Hospi Housing to create more room for students and young professionals, starting April 2026.
Eindhoven, 15 April – Good news for house seekers and for people with extra space at home: the Urban Region Eindhoven is taking the next step in expanding the supply of rooms across the region.
Hospi Housing has already been active in the region for several years: in Eindhoven since 2022, and in Helmond and Geldrop-Mierlo since 2025. From April 2026, the other municipalities within the Urban Region Eindhoven — Best, Nuenen, Oirschot, Son en Breugel, Veldhoven, and Waalre — will also join the initiative. Through this partnership, the municipalities aim to create more housing opportunities for room seekers and support residents who want to temporarily rent out a room in their home.
Creating more housing with existing space
In this form of home sharing, a resident rents out a room in the home they live in themselves. This creates additional housing for people looking for a room, while also offering benefits for hosts, such as extra income and companionship at home.
It also helps make better use of the existing housing stock. At a time when housing is scarce, an unused room can make a real difference. At the same time, this type of home sharing can strengthen social connection within neighbourhoods.
Alderman Mieke Verhees of the municipality of Eindhoven says:
“It is not easy for students and young professionals to find housing in Eindhoven and the surrounding region. At the same time, there are many homes where not all rooms are being used. Renting out a room in your own home can be an attractive solution for many people. It is great that Hospi Housing is now facilitating this across the entire Urban Region Eindhoven.”
A regional partnership for two years
The partnership will run for two years and focuses on informing, encouraging, and personally guiding potential hosts and host families across the Urban Region Eindhoven.
The participating municipalities see this form of home sharing as an important measure in addressing the housing shortage. It can help reduce pressure on the housing market, lower financial strain, and also help tackle loneliness. Under certain conditions, hosts may also be eligible for the Dutch tax exemption for room rental income.
Alderman Patrick Kok of the municipality of Nuenen also highlights the social value of the initiative:
“Renting out a room in your own home is a wonderful social and affordable solution. You help someone find housing, make better use of existing space, and strengthen human connection at the same time. In Nuenen, we certainly want to make use of those opportunities.”
Low-threshold and supported throughout
In many cases, renting out a room in the participating municipalities is possible without a permit, depending on local regulations and the living situation. This makes it relevant for both homeowners and tenants. For tenants, prior permission may be required from the landlord or housing corporation. In some cases, coordination with a mortgage provider may also be needed.
Hospi Housing, the largest home-sharing platform of its kind in the Netherlands, supports both hosts and room seekers throughout the process. Potential hosts can sign up free of charge and receive support with finding a suitable tenant, drawing up a rental agreement, and navigating the practical steps involved.

With this collaboration, the municipalities, together with Hospi Housing and involved partners, want to make a lasting contribution to reducing the shortage of rooms in the region. During the partnership period, results will be evaluated and the approach will be improved where needed.
