Target of 100,000 new homes comes closer, but extra housing remains urgently needed

The Dutch target of building 100,000 new homes per year appears to be within reach in 2027. That is positive news, but pressure on the housing market remains high. Making better use of existing homes is still essential.

The Netherlands is moving closer to its goal of realising 100,000 new homes per year. According to a new forecast by ABF Research, shared by the Dutch national government, almost 100,000 homes could be completed in 2027. That is good news for everyone looking for a home. However, it does not mean the housing crisis has been solved. The housing shortage remains significant, and many people still experience how difficult it is to find a suitable place to live.

An important milestone

For years, the national goal has been to add 100,000 homes per year. Until now, that target has not been reached. According to ABF Research, this may change in 2027, when housing production is expected to come close to 100,000 homes.

That would be an important step. More new construction is urgently needed to reduce pressure on the housing market. Especially in cities with many students, starters and international workers, demand for affordable housing remains high.

New construction alone is not enough

At the same time, it is important to stay realistic. Building new homes takes time. It often takes more than two years between a building permit and the completion of a home. In addition, challenges such as grid congestion, nitrogen restrictions and other spatial constraints can delay construction.

The total housing stock also does not increase one-to-one with the number of homes completed. Some homes are demolished or replaced. That is why, alongside new construction, the Netherlands also needs other ways to make housing available more quickly.
