Press release - July 13, 2023

The number of students in The Hague is growing. In a city already facing an enormous housing shortage, the demand for student accommodation is also increasing. This is taken into account in new construction plans, but there are also opportunities within the existing housing supply. One example is through homestay (hospitaverhuur; in Dutch), where someone makes a room in their house available to another resident, such as a student. The municipality of The Hague is encouraging Homestay and will promote this form of rental through a campaign.

The campaign is launched in response to an initiative proposal from the municipal council and aims to make a significant contribution to the housing shortage in The Hague through Homestay. Alderman Martijn Balster: 'There is still a significant shortage of housing in The Hague. Many students are also looking for their own place in our city. With Homestay [hospitaverhuur], someone who is not using a space in their home can offer housing to someone else. It's a win-win situation!'

Homestay in The Hague

In The Hague, it is permitted for single-person households to have one tenant without requiring a permit. For households of two or more people, a conversion permit is required to rent out a room. This is possible in 9 districts in the city. For more information see the website of The Hague municipality.

Sustainable and social solution to housing shortage

Rental platform Hospi Housing will lead the campaign to promote hospitaverhuur. Hospi Housing acts as a connection between students searching for a room and local host families and hosts. The municipality and Hospi Housing will collaborate for a period of two years. The goal is for one hundred students to find a room each year through this method. This way, The Hague is working towards a sustainable and social solution for the housing shortage. For more information see the rules and possibilities of Homestay in The Hague.
