Renting out in Almere
Almere is one of the youngest and fastest-growing cities in the Netherlands, now home to around 225,000 people. It isn't a classic student city; housing pressure comes mainly from starters and young families. New construction is the main lever the municipality pulls, but renting out a room in your own home helps right away.
Hospita rental: no permit needed
The municipality is clear: to rent out part of your own home you do not need a municipal permit. You live there yourself and share facilities with your tenant. Do mind fire safety: for existing room rental a use notification via the Environment Desk (Omgevingsloket) may be required.
Renting to more people
Converting a home into self-contained or non-self-contained units is, by contrast, a sensitive matter in Almere. Since April 2020 it has in principle not been permitted across the whole city to split a single-family home or add extra households to it. If you want to go beyond hospita rental, first check the environment plan and, if in doubt, contact the municipality.
