Organizing a viewing
A viewing is when you meet a potential tenant in person for the first time. Exciting for both of you, and also the best way to feel whether there's a connection.
Preparation
- Clean and tidy your home: first impressions count
- Prepare a few questions: what do you want to know about the candidate?
- Allow enough time: 30-45 minutes is ideal
- Be on time, or let the candidate know if you're running late
During the viewing
- Tour: Show the room, but also the shared spaces (kitchen, bathroom, living room, and garden if you have one).
- Conversation: Talk about expectations, lifestyle, and house rules. This is the moment to be open.
- Answer questions: The candidate will have questions too. Be open and honest.
- Atmosphere: Pay attention to how it feels. Can you imagine this person living with you?
Online viewing
Can't the candidate come in person, for instance because they're still abroad? A video viewing is a great alternative. Use video chat to show the room and get acquainted. We do recommend always meeting in person before signing the contract.
After the viewing
Don't keep the candidate waiting too long for your reply. Let them know within a few days whether you want to proceed, even if the answer is no. That's fair and respectful.
