A comprehensive guide for international students on how to register in various Dutch municipalities and obtain a BSN number.

Is it your first time moving to the Netherlands? We are so excited for you! But first, there are a few administrative tasks to take care of. As an international student, one of the first things you'll need to do upon arrival is register with your local municipality. This process might seem daunting, but with Hospi Housing step-by-step guide, you'll be set up in no time.

Why do I have to register in a municipality?

Upon arriving in the Netherlands, all international students must register with the local municipality (gemeente in Dutch) in the city where they reside. Note: it is preferred to register within 5 days of your arrival in the Netherlands. This registration is crucial for several reasons:

- To obtain a Citizen Service Number (BSN), which is required for various administrative tasks, such as opening a bank account or visiting a doctor.

- To ensure you're eligible for local services and benefits.

- To stay compliant with Dutch regulations.

What is the general registration process?

Step 1: Gather Necessary Documents

Bring a valid passport, a copy of your rental agreement, your birth certificate and proof of enrollment from your educational institution. Check the website of your municipality for specific requirements down below.

Step 2: Schedule an Appointment

Schedule an appointment and visit the local municipality office in person or make an appointment online.

Step 3: Complete the Registration

Fill out the required forms and submit your documents. Once registered, you'll receive your BSN within four weeks.

What is RNI Registration?

If you're staying only for less than four months, you might need to register in the Non-residents Records Database (RNI). If you are staying for longer than four months, RNI registration does not apply to you. Once again, check the website of your local municipality for specific requirements down below.
